Wood and charcoal are among the most traditional sources of energy; they are usually presented as having been replaced by coal in the nineteenth century and then oil in the twentieth as part of the grand energy transition.

Wood and other traditional biofuels accounted for just 6% of global primary energy consumption in 2023 down from 98% in 1800, according to estimates prepared by Our World in Data.

But their declining relative share has masked a huge increase in the absolute amount of energy derived from wood-basedfuels; wood provided almost twice as much energy in 2023 as in either 1900 or 1800.

Primary energy consumption has grown so rapidly older sources have continued to increase even as new, more flexible and convenient sources have emerged.

Continued growth in consumption of wood fuels illustrates that the energy transition has so far been characterised by the addition of new forms of energy rather than the replacement or substitution of older ones.

Wood fuels have been displaced from traditional uses such as heating and cooking in the advanced economies but have found new uses in power generation and in new geographies especially in Africa and Asia.

RECORD FUEL OUTPUT

Global energy production from wood was close to a record high in 2023 according to estimates prepared by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Wood fuel production (including traditional fuels such as firewood and charcoal as well as modern fuels such as pellets) was almost 2 billion cubic metres in 2023, up from 1.5 billion cubic metres in 1961.

Fuel production accounted for half of all the roundwood harvested around the world, with the rest used mainly for construction, pulp, furniture, particle board and other items.

Nearly three-quarters of global wood fuel was harvested in Africa (38%) and Asia (35%) with smaller shares in the Americas (18%) and Europe (9%).

Fuel production is forecast to continue growing, reaching somewhere between 2.3 billion and 2.7 billion cubic metres per year by 2050, depending on how fast alternatives are deployed.  

COOKING AND HEATING

More than 2 billion people mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia relied on wood as their primary source of energy for heating and cooking in 2022, according to the World Health Organization.

Wood is favoured by low-income households in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia because it ismore affordable, reliable and in some cases the only available option – even if the resulting indoor air pollution is damaging to health.

Two-thirds of all households in Africa rely on wood fuel, and wood energy accounts for around 27% of the region’s primary energy supply. In several Sub-Saharan countries, wood energy comprises 90% of the household energy mix.

Households in rural areas rely on collecting firewood but urban counterparts typically use charcoal because it is more energy dense and therefore easier to transport as well as giving offless smoke.

Africa’s rising consumption of wood fuels has been driven by increasing population, urbanisation, income gains and limited access to electricity.

Urban households typically use more energy, so where migration to the cities has not been accompanied by an increase in electricity access, consumption of firewood and especially charcoal has increased.

Global charcoal production increased to a record 59 million tonnes in 2023 up from 51 million tonnes in 2013 and 42 million tonnes in 2003, according to the FAO.

Africa accounted for more than 60% of global charcoal production last year and it is the main source of heating and cooking fuel in many urban areas in East, West and Southern Africa.

ELECTRICITY GENERATION

Increasing consumption of wood fuel is not confined to traditional firewood and charcoal markets in developing countries.

Countries in Northwest Europe and Northeast Asia are burning increasing volumes of wood, including in pellet form, to generate electricity.

Pellets and other wood fuel have become popular with generators because policymakers have characterised them as a renewable fuel with low net emissions, ensuring favourable regulatory treatment, provided they meet standards for sustainable forest management.

Unlike wind and solar generation, wood-fired generation is despatchable and does not suffer from intermittency; pellet-fired generation therefore offers the best of both words.

Global output of wood pellets had more than doubled to 47 million tonnes in 2023 from 21 million tonnes ten years earlier, according to the FAO.

In 2023, the world’s top pellet importers were the United Kingdom (6 million tonnes), Japan (6 million), South Korea (4 million), Denmark (3 million), the Netherlands (2 million), Italy (2 million), France (1 million) and Belgium (1 million).

For the European Union, bioenergy produced from agricultural, forestry and organic waste feedstock is the main source of renewable energy, accounting for about 59% of renewable energy consumption in 2021.

Primary solid fuels accounted for 70% of total bioenergy production, and of all solid fuels 66% came from forest biomass with much smaller shares from organic waste (26%) and agricultural biomass (8%).

Large-scale use of forest biomass is controversial, however, with some EU policymakers expressing concern about how far it is reducing emissions compared with combustion of fossil fuels.

The European Union’s updated Renewable Energy Directive, adopted in 2023, called for a more detailed definition of sustainable forest management to ensure wood fuels are actually reducing net emissions.

Biomass and timber are now valuable resources for heating homes and generating electricity. The people of Little Hintock have turned to managing their forests sustainably, integrating modern technologies like solar panels mounted on cottages and wind turbines nestled among the trees. Yet, the tension between modernisation and tradition remains central, echoing Hardy’s themes.

Characters in Transition

The characters in this modern Woodlanders would navigate the complexities of this energy transition. Marty South, the woodcutter’s daughter, embodies resilience and quiet strength. She continues her family’s generational forest management skills but with modern tools at her disposal. She now uses traditional forestry techniques and renewable technology to meet the village’s energy needs. Marty’s reverence for the land has only grown deeper in an age where energy conservation and sustainability are paramount.

Grace Melbury, caught between the old and new, represents the modern struggle between rural simplicity and urban sophistication. Perhaps she will return from the city in the future, where the economic collapse due to dwindling fossil fuels forced her to abandon a professional career that no longer offers security.
