Increasing unemployment from discretionary formal employment is leading to an increase in demand for land to grow your own food.

“Their model is simple: to lease land from farmers and rent patches of it out as allotments, like a sort of WeWork [a flexible workspace provider] for veg.

It has proved stunningly successful. Having opened its first site in Bath in 2022, Roots has since created 19 more on the edges of British towns and cities. It has attracted some 5,000 members, each paying from £9.99 per month for a “mini” 12sq m allotment to £45.99 per month for a larger plot of land to call their own –or at least theirs to grow on.”
